Airport Review: London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

London Heathrow Airport is major international airport serving the city of London, England and the United Kingdom. Heathrow airport is the largest of London’s six international airports. Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe, second busiest in the world by international passenger traffic and fifth busiest by overall passenger traffic.

The airport serves as a hub for flag carrier British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. The airport is also served by another 80 airlines that offer flights to cities across Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, North America, South America and the Middle East. Heathrow is one of few international airports that is connected to all six inhabited continents offering the most international connections of any airport in the world.

Despite its size and passenger traffic, the airport only features two parallel runways that service four passenger terminals numbered from 2 to 5. Each terminal is located separate from each other on a site that covers 12.3 square kilometres. Terminal 2 and 3 are connected via an underground passenger tunnel. Terminals 2 and 3 are connected to 4 and 5 via the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express train lines and the London Underground Piccadilly line.

Heathrow Airport is located 23 kilometres west of Central London. The airport is connected to the centre of London via several train lines. The Heathrow Express the fastest option connecting the city and airport in as little as 15 minutes. The Elizabeth Line and the Picadilly line on the London Underground are two other options available to visitors reaching the city in approximately 35 minutes and 50 minutes respectively.
