Airport Review: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a major international airport serving the city of Amsterdam serving also as the Netherlands main airport. Impressively, AMS is the world’s third busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic. In terms of Europe, the airport is also third busiest and busiest overall in terms of overall aircraft movement.

Schiphol airport is one of the oldest in Europe having operated under different functions since 1916. The origin of the word Schiphol, which means ship hole, is disputed with many theories believing the area where the current airport is located may have served various maritime purposes when the area was a waterway. 

AMS serves as the main hub for KLM, the flag carrier of the Netherlands. The airport is also serviced by another 72 airlines that offer flights to many destinations across Europe as well as flights to Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

The airport features six runways that service a single terminal building that is itself divided into three departure halls. Interestingly, the airport is one of the few around the world that is located below sea level.

The airport is located in Haarlemmermeer approximately 10km southwest of Amsterdam. Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) operates a major railway station that is located directly below the airport. Direct services are available from this station to Amsterdam Centraal, most major cities most cities across the Netherlands and select cities in neighbouring countries.
