Stadium Review: Stadium Australia, Sydney

Stadium Australia is a large multipurpose sports venue located in Sydney. Opened in 1999, the stadium features a capacity a currently seating capacity of 82,000. The stadium is currently known as Accor Stadium due to sponsorship reasons also previously known as ANZ Stadium and Telstra Stadium.

The stadium was purpose built as the main stadium for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games held in Sydney. Upon opening the stadium featured a capacity of 115,000 making it the largest Olympic Stadium ever built. Post Olympics, the upper stand at each end of the stadium removed reducing the capacity to 82,000.

The stadium was designed in order to accommodate a wide variety of sports that are popular in Australia. Both lower stands are moveable allowing the field to change from an oval shape to mostly rectangular.

Since opening over 25 years ago, the stadium has hosted rugby league, rugby union, cricket, association football, Australian rules cricket, motorsports and American football. The stadium is also a popular concert venue for local and international musicians and entertainers.

Stadium Australia is located with Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney’s west approximately 15km from Sydney’s CBD. The stadium is located directly across from Olympic Park train station making it easy to get to and from the area from anywhere in Sydney.
