Airport Review: Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Vienna International Airport is an international airport that serves the Austrian capital city of Vienna. VIE is the busiest airport in Austria and continually ranks within the top 20 of busiest airports across Europe. The airport is also known as Wien-Schwechat Airport due its location in the area of Schwechat.

The airport was built in 1938 and was used during World War II before its conversion to civilian use in the 1950s. The airport features two runways that service the airports four terminals. Terminals 1 through 3 all share the same interconnected terminal building with terminal 1A located in separate building adjacent to terminal 1.

The airport is a hub for national carrier Austrian Airlines as well as serving as a focus city for low-cost carriers Ryan Air and Wizz Air. The airport is also served by another 63 airlines that offer flights to Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America.

The airport is located in Schwechat a small city located 18km southeast from the centre of Vienna. The airport is well connected to a number of different public transport options. The city airport train (CAT) connects the airport with the city in 16 minutes arriving at the Wien Mitte station where you connect to other local trains. The S7 city train is another option which is slightly slower but offers a broader network of stops for visitors to choose from. The Railjet national trains, part of the national ÖBB train network, offers a broader network arriving directly at Wien Hauptbahnhof. Buses, taxis and rideshare are also readily available.
