Airport Review: Miami International Airport (MIA)

Miami International Airport is the major international airport serving the city of Miami. The airport is the tenth busiest airport in the United States and the busiest in terms of international passenger arrivals. The airport was historically known as Wilcox Field.

The airport opened in 1928 as part of Pan American Airways expansion plans. The initial airport was ahead of its time and included a number of features that would become common place at future airports across the United States.

The airport features three terminals (North, Central and South) that share the same connected u-shaped terminal building which is itself located amongst the airport’s four runways. The North terminal is used by American Airlines, with the North terminal shared amongst other Oneworld airlines and the South terminal used for the arrival and departure of most other airlines.

The airport serves as a major hub for American Airlines serving as the airlines main gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. The airport is also served by and other 62 airlines that offer flights to 185 domestic and international destinations across North, Central and South America, Europe and Africa.

The airport is located 13km northwest of Downtown Miami. Several different public transportation options are available to visitors. The MIA Mover is a free service that will take you from the main terminal building to the Miami Intermodal Centre where you’ll be able to choose between the Metrobus, Metrorail and the City of Miami Trolley. The Miami Beach bus is also available providing a direct link between the airport and South Beach.
