Airport Review: Wellington International Airport (WLG)

Wellington International Airport is an international airport serving the city of Wellington in New Zealand. The airport is known as one of the most difficult airports for landing planes due to its location and the strong winds common throughput the mountainous area. The airport was formerly known as Rongotai Airport.

The airport features one runway that services a single terminal building which caters to both domestic and international flights. The terminal building features a modern design that is kept up to date with current standards by the airport’s constant improvement and redevelopment programs. WLG is a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air. The airport is also served by seven other airlines that offer flights around New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and several pacific islands.

The airport is an attraction in and of itself and a must visit for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Keep an eye out for Gandalf soaring through the main terminal area on the back of a giant eagle and Smaug the Dragon keeping a menacing eye on visitors in the arrivals area.

Wellington Airport is located 8km from the Wellington central business district. The Airport Express bus service runs from the airport to Wellington Station in the centre of the city. This is a cost-effective option that takes approximately 35 minutes. Taxis and Uber are also readily available taking approximately 30 minutes to reach the CBD.
