Airport Review: Auckland Airport (AKL)

Auckland airport, as the name would suggest, is the main airport serving the city of Auckland in New Zealand. The airport has operated since 1966 out of the suburb of Māngere, south of the Auckland CBD.

AKL airport is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand serving as the country’s gateway to the world. Over 16 million passengers used Auckland Airport in 2023 connecting the country to 23 domestic destinations and 41 international destinations across Australia, the Pacific, Asia, the Middle East and North and South America. Auckland airport is the principal hub for national carrier Air New Zealand and is also served by another 27 airlines.

The airport features a single runway that serves the airport’s two terminals, an international and domestic terminal. A free inter-terminal bus is available for passengers transiting between both terminals.

Auckland airport is located approximately 17km from the Auckland city centre. Expect the trip to take approximately 30 minutes by taxi or rideshare. The airport is also served by a number of different bus services each offering different transit times and prices. Look out for the 38 bus, SkyDrive and Airport Link services when exiting the arrivals area.
