Carrasco International Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Montevideo. The airport’s full name is Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco General Cesareo L. Berisso taking its name both from the Carrasco area of Montevideo in which the airport is located and Cesáreo L. Berisso, a Uruguayan aviation pioneer.

The current airport terminal replaced the old Carrasco International Airport in 2009 after it had served the city for over 60 years. The airport offers travellers regular flights to several destinations in South America as well as direct flights to the United States and Europe.

The airport was designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly who also designed the Laguna Garzon Bridge near Punta de Leste. The airport’s striking design is inspired by the sand dunes that line Uruguay’s vast Atlantic coast. The airport’s straightforward layout is considered one of the best in Latin America with all domestic and international flights arriving and departing from the same terminal split across the upper departures area and ground floor arrivals area.

MVD airport is located approximately 22km from the Montevideo city centre. Visitors can choose between taxis, Uber, private transfers (Remise) or buses upon their arrival. Taxis, Uber or Remises are reasonably priced and is by far the best option taking approximately 40 minutes to reach most hotels in the city centre.
