Behind a pair of white, non-descript doors in a laneway just off Oxford Street lies one of Darlinghurst’s worst kept secrets. Originally conceived as a hidden/underground bar, Shady Pines Saloon has now become one of the area’s best bars and one of Sydney’s best themed bars.

Upon entering, you’d be forgiven for thinking a set from an old western film had been disassembled, brought to Sydney and meticulously put back together in a basement on Foley Street. Antique furniture, mounted moose heads and American breweriana fill the dimly-lit saloon whilst a selection of classic country tunes completes the bar’s western theme.

Behind the bar, visitors are spoiled for choice with a team of friendly staff ready to serve you anything from their wide collection of whiskies, extensive list of cocktails and an assortment of bottled and canned beers. We recommend sitting at the bar and enjoying a bowl of complementary peanuts whilst you enjoy your chosen beverage.

Themed bars have never been more important in our covid-affected world, providing us with an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a different time and place without ever having to leave home. Shady Pines Saloon does just that, offering visitors a charming slice of the Old West in the heart of old Sydney town.
