The Civic Hotel is a pub located in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. Built in 1940, the venue is one of Sydney’s finest examples of art deco pub design that still exists today due to the way it has managed to maintain much of its original design.
The exterior of the building remains virtually unchanged although now dwarfed by its surroundings which have changed drastically since opening almost 90 years ago. The pub was designed in the P & O ship style of art deco, due to its similarities to the grand ocean liners of the time.
The inside on the other hand has changed with the original central bar that used to span the entirety of the bottom floor reduced significantly to accommodate the venue’s kitchen. The pub’s original floor tiles remain hinting at the old floor plan of the front bar.
Apart from the saloon style front bar, you’ll also find the Ni Hao Bar located on the upper level, a 1970s Hong Kong style bar and restaurant and the Civic underground in the basement that hosts DJs and live music on the weekends.
