How to Visit Memento Park in Budapest

Memento Park is a sculpture park located in Budapest. The park serves as an outdoor museum that collects statues, sculptures, busts and plaques that were erected during Hungary’s communist period from 1949-1989.

The park features 41 pieces from the country’s communist era with various depictions of Lenin, Marx, Engels and other prominent figures and events during this time in Hungarian history. The museum doesn’t seek to glorify the statues or events depicted but instead provide visitors to freely contemplate and reflect, ideals which were restricted during the time in which the statues were built.

The park also features a replica of the remains of the Stalin Monument that used to stand in central Budapest. Stalin’s boots as the remains came to be known, became a symbol of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

The park also features a small photo exhibition and cinema offering further context and history. You’ll also find a small gift shop and a Trabant, the popular East German people’s car that would have been found everywhere in the eastern bloc.

Memento Park is easily from Budapest via public transport. Take Budapest Metro’s M4 green line until terminus station Kelenföld vasútállomás. Once you exit the station, take bus number 101E and alight at stop number two, Memento Park.
