Matavari International Airport is an airport that serves the city of Hanga Roa on Easter Island. The airport is recognised as the most remote airport in the world due it’s distance to the next closest airport which is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) 3,759 km away.
Due to the island’s small size, the airport’s single runway almost reaches from one end of the island to the other. Amenities at the airport are basic but perfectly adequate for an airport of this size and are a great reminder of the similar times of air travel.
Currently LATAM is the only airline that offers flights to the island with direct flights to Santiago arriving and departing each day. Direct flights between the airport and Papeete were available in the past but have been suspended since 2020.
Transportation options at the airport are limited with most visitors organising transport to and from the airport with their accommodation before they arrive.
