Stadium Review: Saitama Stadium 2002, Saitama

Saitama Stadium 2002 is a football specific stadium located in the city of Saitama. The stadium opened in 2001 and features a capacity of 63,700. The stadium is the largest football specific stadium in Japan and third largest overall.

The features a distinctive design with each triangular part of the stadium’s roof appearing to float over the two main grandstands.

The stadium was built in order to host matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The stadium hosted four games at the tournament including Japan’s opening match and a semi-final.

Since the World Cup, the stadium continues to host football serving as the home stadium of Japanese football team Uruwa Red Diamonds. The stadium is also the defacto home ground of the Japanese national football team hosting the majority of their home games.

The stadium can be reached in as little as 45 minutes from Tokyo station. Alight at Urawa-Misono station and walk 20 minutes to reach the stadium’s main gate.
