
Kansai International Airport is primary international airport serving the city of Osaka. The airport also serves as the main international gateway for the cities of Kyoto and Kobe. The airport continually ranks amongst the ten best airports in the world.
The airport opened in 1994 due to an increase in traffic at Osaka Itami Airport. The construction of the airport became one of the most expensive projects in history, a monumental project that took 20 years to plan.
The airport features two terminals designed by famed architect Renzo Piano. Terminal 1 is the longest airport terminal in the world and handles international flights. Terminal 2 caters mostly to low-cost carriers.
The airport serves as a hub for All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Jetstar Japan and Peach. The airport is also served by another 68 airlines that offer flights to cities across Asia, Oceania, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
The airport is located on an artificial island on Osaka Bay approximately 38km from the centre of Osaka. Two train services connect the airport to the mainland: the JR West operated Haruka limited express train and Nankai’s rapi:t service.
