The Namdaemun Gate is a historic gate located in Seoul. The gate is one of the eight gates that used to make up the Seoul City Wall. The official name of the gate is Sungnyemun and has been recognised as Korea’s no.1 national treasure.
The gate is easily accessible from anywhere in the city and is free to enter. When exploring the monument, you may notice the mismatched colour of the stones that make up the gates base. In 2008 the gate was almost completely destroyed by arson with the pagoda almost completely rebuilt.
Despite the damage and reconstruction, the gate is still one of the city’s most popular and recognisable attractions.
