
Athens International Airport is the primary international airport serving the city of Athens in Greece. The airport opened in 2001 and is the largest international airport in Greece and 16th largest across Europe. The full name of the airport is Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos.
The airport replaced the city’s former airport Ellinikon International Airport upon opening. The airport was built in preparation for the city’s hosting of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
The airport serves as hub for national flag carrier Aegean Airlines as well as Olympic Air. The airport is also served by another 64 airlines that connect Athens with cities across Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and the Middle East.
The airport features two parallel runways that connect aircrafts to the airports two terminals. The main terminal serves flights from both Schengen and international locations whilst the satellite terminal is mainly used for flights from low-cost carriers.
The airport is located in Spata, a town located approximately 20km east from downtown Athens. The airport is connected to the Athens Metro via a dedicated airport station on Line 3. Taxis and rideshare services are also readily available.
