Cafe Batavia is a cafe/bar located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The venue is one of the most famous in the city and a popular spot for visiting foreign dignitaries.
The building housing the cafe was built in 1805 as accommodation and offices for high-ranking VOC officers. The venue would eventually become an art gallery before becoming the cafe/bar that exists today in the early 1990s.
The restaurant features a menu full of Indonesian dishes making it the perfect place to try the local cuisine when visiting Jakarta.
The old world charm of the building has been expertly preserved with the current cafe taking full advantage of its colonial architecture. The lower level features arched doorways, slowly oscillating ceiling fans, tropical plants and a grand staircase that leads to the first floor. Upstairs you’ll find a smaller bar and a large dining room that overlooks Fatahillah Square.
Despite having only been a cafe restaurant since the early 1990s, the venue fells much older.
