

The San Siro is a famous stadium located in Milan. Opened in 1926, the monumental stadium features a capacity of 80,018 making it the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Due to its long history and striking design, the stadium is recognised as one of world footballs most famous stadiums. The stadium is also known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, named after the famous two-time World Cup winner and former player for both AC and Inter Milan.
The stadium primarily serves as the long-time home ground of two of Italian football’s biggest teams AC Milan and Inter Milan. As a result, the Derby della Madonnina, the match between both teams is held at the stadium and is recognised as one of the world most famous football derbies.
Over its long history the stadium has hosted a number of important sporting events. Hosting matches at the 1934 and 1990 World Cup, the 1980 European championships, four European Cup finals and is also due to host the opening ceremony at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games held in Milan-Cortina.
The stadium’s distinctive red roof was added in 1990 when the stadium was renovated in anticipation of the 1990 World Cup.
Since 2019 there have been several calls for the stadium to be replaced by a smaller venue that will be shared by both Milan teams.
The stadium is located in the San Siro area of Milan, north west of the city centre. San Siro Stadio metro station is located right outside the stadium. The station is the western terminus of line 5 on the Milan metro network making it easy to get to from anywhere in the city.
