Stadium Guide: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami

Hard Rock Stadium is a multipurpose sports venue located in Miami Gardens; a city located north of Downtown Miami. The stadium has gone by many names over its long history, opening first as Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987, later becoming Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Land Shark Stadium, and Sun Life Stadium before changing to its current name in 2016.

The stadium is the home ground of the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes college football team. The stadium has hosted six Super Bowls, the second most after Cesars Superdome on New Orleans. Hard Rock Stadium is also due to host this year’s Copa America final and is expected to host several games during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Significant renovations took place at the stadium in 2016 that included the construction of an impressive open-air canopy that now covers the entirety of the seating bowl. The newly renovated stadium looks and feels like a completely different stadium to that of the original 1987 design almost feeling like a modern version of Milan’s famous San Siro. Although the overall seating capacity was reduced to 64,767, the stadium is aesthetically and functionally far better than its predecessor.

Unfortunately, the stadium is notoriously difficult to get to. Public transport options are limited and traffic to and from the stadium on game days can be challenging. We strongly recommended arriving at the stadium early and organising your return transport with your hotel beforehand.
