Stadium Guide: Sky Stadium, Wellington

Sky Stadium is a mixed-use stadium located in the city of Wellington. Opened in the year 2000, the stadium features a capacity of 34,500 that can be expanded for non-sporting events. When used for international sporting events the stadium is known as Wellington Regional Stadium. The stadium was previously known as Westpac Stadium and is renowned for its nickname the Cake Tin due its circular, silver shape.

The stadium is built on reclaimed railway land behind the city’s main train station and adjacent to the port of Wellington. Sky Stadium became the first bowl shaped stadium built in New Zealand with its single seating level providing excellent views from anywhere in the stadium.

The stadium is primarily used as the home of the Hurricanes Rugby Union team and the Wellington Phenix association football team. Due to its ovaloid shape, the stadium is also capable of hosting cricket matches serving as one of the main venues for New Zealand’s national team.

Sky Stadium is located on Waterloo Quay, close to Wellington’s CBD. The stadium is conveniently located behind Wellington Railway Station which is connected to most services with the Wellington area. Once you arrive at the station the Fran Wilde Elevated Walkway connects directly to the stadium’s main entrance.
