Stadium Review: Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam

The Olympic Stadium is a sporting venue located in Amsterdam. The stadium opened in 1928 and currently features a capacity of 22,288. 

The stadium is best known as the principal venue for 1928 Summer Olympic Games. The versatile design of the stadium was able to accommodate athletics, track cycling, Equestrian, Football and Gymnastics.

The stadium is notable for having introduced the concept of a cauldron at an Olympic Stadium with each subsequent Olympics featuring a similar cauldron based on this idea. The cauldron was located at the top of the marathon tower, the stadium’s must recognizable feature and a popular design feature for stadiums at the time.

The stadium was the long-time home of Dutch football team Ajax’s international matches before the team moved to Amsterdam Arena in 1996. 

The stadium is currently used for smaller sporting events with athletics competitions still able to utilise the venues athletics track. The stadium is also a popular concert venue and events space.

The stadium is located 12 km from the centre of Amsterdam. If visiting by car, expect the trip to take approximately 20 minutes. The stadium is also easily accessible via the Amsterdam metro’s Amstelveenseweg station which located a short 5 minute walk away.
