
Milan Malpensa Airport is an international airport that serves the Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria areas in Italy as well as Ticino in Switzerland. MXP is one of three airports that serve the city of Milan along with Linate Airport and Bergamo Airport. The airport’s full name is Milan Malpensa Airport “Silvio Berlusconi” named after the former Prime Minister of Italy.
The current site of MXP has been used for aviation for more than 100 years having first been used by the Caproni brothers to test their various prototypes. The airport would then be utilised by the military from the 1920s until it began commercial operations in 1948.
The airport is the second busiest in Europe and ranks among the top 30 busiest airports across Europe. MXP is also ranks 9th in the world and 6th in Europe in terms of the number of countries that it serves with direct flights. Interestingly, the airport is located within the Parco Naturale Lombardo della Valle del Ticino, a nature reserve that is recognised by UNESCO.
The airport features two runways that connect to the airports two passenger terminals. MXP is served by 87 different airlines that offer travellers flight to cities across Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and the Middle East.
The airport is located in Ferno approximately 50km from the city centre of Milan. Several trains services connect the airport to the city with the Malpensa Express the most popular, expect the trip to take approximately 40 minutes.
