
The Margarita is the quintessential cocktail, a drink you are likely to find at any bar all over the world. The cocktail is by far the most popular tequila-based cocktail and has been the most popular in the United States for many years.
Like most great cocktails, the origin of the Margarita is disputed with many theories and bartenders laying claim to the invention of the classic cocktail. Most theories tend to lean towards cocktails invention in Mexico at some point in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
The Margarita is one of those classic cocktails that has inspired numerous variations with many replacing or adding ingredients and others changing the drink’s preparation like the ever-popular frozen margarita.
The drink is also commonly served in the eponymous Margarita glass, stepped variant of the common cocktail glass, but you can also find it served in other types of glassware depending on the bar and setting.
Due to its popularity, the drink has found its way into popular culture inspiring songs and receiving its own day, February 22nd.
Ingredients
- 60ml white tequila
- 30ml orange liqueur
- 15ml lime juice
- 1 lime
- Salt
Preparation
- Chill a margarita glass
- Add the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and ice to a cocktail shaker and shake
- Add salt to small plate
- Use a wedge of lime to wet the rim of the margarita glass
- Press the rim of the margarita glass into the plate of salt
- Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the margarita glass
- Add a slice of lime to the rim of the glass to garnish
