John F. Kennedy International Airport is a major international airport serving the city of New York City. The airport is the sixth busiest in the United States and busiest overall in North America in terms of international passenger traffic. Due to its long history of innovation and the city which it serves, the airport is widely considered to be one of the world’s most famous.

The airport opened in 1948 as New York International Airport replacing the Idlewild Beach Golf Course, commonly referred to as Idlewild Airport until it was renamed in 1963 in honour of John F. Kennedy

JFK serves as hub for both American Airlines and Delta Airlines. The airport is also served by another 90 airlines that offer flights to several cities across the United States and flights to all six inhabited continents, one of the few airports to do so. The airport currently hosts the longest commercial flight in the world, operated by Singapore Airlines and connecting Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and JFK, in18 hours.

Over its long history, JFK has been home to some of the most innovative airport architectural design. From the I.M. Pei designed Sundrome for National Airlines, to the space age TWA Flight Center and perhaps most famously the Pan Am Worldport. Unfortunately, most of these structures no longer exist with their replacements, although functional do not recapture the same sense of innovation of their predecessors. Currently, the airport features four runways that services the airports five terminals (1, 4, 5, 7, and 8) which are all arranged around a circular shape and connected via AirTrain JFK.

JFK is located in Jamaica, a neighbourhood of Queens, 26 km southeast of Midtown Manhattan. AirTrain JFK connects the airport to both the New York City Subway and Long Island Railroad expect this budget friendly option to take approximately one hour if heading to Manhattan. Taxis and rideshare are also readily available transporting passengers into the city in approximately 45 minutes. Transit times can vary considerably to the varying traffic conditions within the city.
