Airport Review: Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA)

Yogyakarta International Airport is an international airport serving the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java in Indonesia. The airport replaced the more centrally located Adisutjipto Airport when it opened in 2019.

The new airport was built to serve as the main entry point for visitors to central Java and attractions like Borobudur and Prambanan located around the city of Yogyakarta. The airport is a vast improvement on its predecessor and is ready to cater to increased passenger numbers that are expected to rise in the future.

The airport serves as an operating hub for Garuda Indonesia and an operating base for Lion Air. The airport is also served by another eight airlines that offer flights to cities across Indonesia and select locations around South East Asia.

The airport is located in the Temon district of Kulon Progo Regency in Java approximately 45km from Yogyakarta. Given the distance of the new airport from the city, you can expect the trip to take you over one hour regardless of which option you choose. The airport train is by far the best and most economical with a regular and express trains available to Yogyakarta Station in the centre of the city.
