Airport Review: Humberto Delgado – Lisbon Airport (LIS)

Humberto Delgado Airport is a major airport serving the city of Lisbon, Portugal. The airport is informally known as Lisbon Airport and was formally known as Portela Airport. Despite its single runway, the airport is the 12th busiest in Europe by overall passenger count.

The airport has operated since 1942, with most of the current infrastructure dating back to the 1990s and mid-2000s. The airport incorporates numerous sculptures and murals into its design that pay homage to the country’s history of adventure and discovery. The airport is expected to close when the city’s new airport Lisbon Luís de Camões Airport, opens in 2034.

The airport is the hub for Portuguese flag carrier TAP Air Portugal. LIS is also served by another 52 airlines that offer travellers flights to over 140 destinations across 52 countries across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

The airport utilizes its single runway to great effect with it able to accommodate over 34 million passengers and 200,000 tonnes of cargo per year. The airport features two terminals with Terminal 1 dedicated TAP Air Portugal and other large carriers with Terminal 2, the newer of the two, utilized predominately by low-cost airlines.

The airport is located in the Olivais area of Lisbon, approximately seven kilometres from the centre of the city. Some of the best ways to get from LIS airport to the centre of Lisbon includes the Metro Lisboa which transports visitors to the city in as little as 20 minutes via the Aeroporto – Saldanha Line. Taxi and rideshare services are also available with a journey time of approximately 20 minutes.
