Airport Review: San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Francisco International Airport is an international airport serving the San Francisco Bay Area. SFO is the second busiest airport in California, the fourteenth-busiest in the United States and the 29th-busiest in the world by overall passenger count.

The airport serves as hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. The airport is also served by another 56 airlines that offer flights to 141 destinations across North and Central America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The airport features four runways that service the airport’s four terminals: terminals 1-3 and the international terminal. The airport features unique, circular design that begins with the international terminal and continues in clockwise direction from terminals 3 to 1. The terminal buildings are earthquake resistant, able to withstand a Richter Magnitude 8 earthquake.

SFO is distinctly modern both in and out. You’ll find clean, white interiors throughout the airport with a meticulously, curated collection of over 160 pieces of art built into its design. You’ll find all the usual amenities one would expect from a modern airport and some that are distinctly San Francisco like yoga rooms and the Wag Brigade, a team of assisted therapy animals that roam the terminals.

The airport is located in San Mateo County, approximately 20 kilometers from the centre of San Francisco. Visitors have several options to choose from when arriving at the airport. The BART Rapid Rail services the airport via the SFO BART Station located at the international terminal transporting passengers to downtown San Francisco in 30 minutes. Taxis and rideshare are also available as a more expensive option with slightly shorter travel time.
