The Mirage is a hotel resort and casino located along the famous strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. The casino opened in 1989 as the most expensive hotel resort ever built and as one of the largest hotels in the world. The Mirage became a trendsetter, introducing a number of features that would influence the design of other hotel resorts in Las Vegas and around the world.
The casino opened on land partially occupied by the Castaways Hotel and Casino. Its Y shaped tower was considered revolutionary and featured over 3,000 rooms with its exterior windows made up of 18-karat gold. The casino features a Polynesian theme with aquariums and plant life featured throughout the interior and exterior areas with a nine-story domed atrium near the main entrance as its centre piece.
The Mirage has also featured some of the most popular live shows in Las Vegas. Siegfried & Roy’s famous white tiger magic show was the casino’s signature attraction for 13 years becoming one of the city’s most memorable live shows. Cirque Du Solei’s LOVE, based on the music of the Beatles, would become the casino’s next resident live show running at the property for 18 years.
The Mirage was purchased by Hard Rock International in 2022 who intend to rebrand the casino as Hard Rock Las Vegas. The new ownership group intends to significantly rebrand the casino replacing much of the Polynesian theme with a similar contemporary design found at most modern Hard Rock locations. Unfortunately, these renovations include the construction of guitar shaped tower that will replace the famous volcano and much of the lush landscaping and water features.
