Stadium Guide: La Bombonera, Buenos Aires

La Bombonera is a football stadium located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The stadium is officially called Alberto José Armando Stadium but has always been better known by its more popular nickname. The stadium can accommodate 57,200 spectators and has been the home ground of Argentinian club team Boca Juniors since opening in 1940.

The current stadium is the second stadium to occupy the current location within the La Boca. The original Boca Juniors stadium opened in 1924 featuring a simple wooden design. The team would use this stadium until 1938 when it would be demolished with work then beginning on the construction of the current Bombonera.

Although the stadium opened in 1940, the final design would not be complete until the flat fourth stand, was built in 1996. The venue’s famous nickname is believed to have originated from the stadium’s architect Viktor Sulčič realising the similarities between his design and a box of chocolates. The stadium’s unique design is known to generate an intimidating atmosphere on game days with the stands often shaking due the team’s passionate fan base known as la doce (12th man).

The stadium also features the Museo de la Pasión Boquense, a comprehensive museum located within the stands. Tours of the stadium are also available for those visiting on non-game days. The stadium is located a short six-minute walk from the Caminito making it easy to visit when exploring La Boca.
