Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is the main airport serving the city of Honolulu and the largest serving the Hawaiian archipelago. The airport is named after Daniel Inouye a native of Honolulu and Medal of Honor recipient. The airport is also known by its more common name Honolulu International Airport.

The airport serves as the main hub for Hawaiian Airlines which makes up almost half of all the airports overall traffic. The airport is also served by another 19 airlines that transport passengers to numerous cities across North America, Asia and Oceania.

The airport features four runaways that service the airports three terminals with one of the four, known as the reef runway, built off shore, the first in the world to do so. Terminal one and three caters to interisland flights and flights to the mainland whilst terminal two mainly focuses on flights to international destinations. Be sure to get a window seat when flying into the airport to enjoy some impressive views across the green hills of the Hawaiian Islands.

The quality of the airport’s public areas varies. The older areas have a nice vintage feel about them but could do with a bit of modernisation work to improve the experience for arriving passengers. The newer parts of the airport feature wide open spaces that allow for plenty of natural light and several great areas for plane watching.

HNL airport is located approximately 14 km from Waikiki. Expect the trip to take approximately 20 minutes if you chose to take a taxi or Uber. Numerous companies also operate shared shuttle bus serves from the airport for a slightly cheaper price and longer travel time. A city bus is also available that caters more to those travelling light.
