Bar Review: Marble Bar, Sydney

The Marble Bar is a heritage listed bar located below the Hilton Hotel in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. The bar has been one of the city’s most opulent venues since first opening over 130 years ago.

The bar dates back to 1893 having originally been built within the former Adams Hotel. In 1971 the bar was dismantled and reassembled piece by piece in the basement of the newly opened Hilton Hotel on George Street. The work that must have gone into the disassembling and reassembling the bar is impressive considering some of the delicate materials that were used in its construction.

Designed by Varney Parkes, architect and son of Henry Parkes, with a lavish, Victorian design that’s still impressive over a century after its construction. Featuring plate-glass mirrors across its walls, intricate mosaic floors, a domed stained-glass roof, marble pillars and no less than 14 artworks by Australian artist Julian Ashton, it is clear that no expense was spared during its construction.
