Bar Review: Greenwood Hotel, North Sydney, Sydney

The Greenwood Hotel is a bar located in North Sydney, a secondary business district across the harbour from Sydney’s CBD. The bar opened in 1992 within a heritage listed sandstone building that once housed a church and public school.

The venue was originally built in 1878 as St Leonards Public School before later becoming the North Sydney Technical High School. In the early 90s the former school was converted into what would become the Greenwood Hotel. The conversion from school to bar was an arduous process that saved the historic building from any major changes.

The Greenwood Hotel makes great use of the school’s former space. The inside of the building features several unique areas with the most notable being the chapel and lounge bars. Each area has been carefully designed around the building’s historic details with the chapel bar in particular using the arched windows and sandstone to great effect. Outside you’ll find two excellent courtyard areas that provide a great juxtaposition between the heritage listed building and surrounding modern high-rises.
