Stadium Guide: Eden Park, Auckland

Eden Park is a mixed-use sports venue located in Auckland. The stadium features a maximum capacity of 60,000 and is known as New Zealand’s national stadium, primarily used for rugby union and cricket, two of the country’s most popular sports.

The area where the current stadium is located has been used for sports since 1900. A former swampland, the stadium would begin to become what it is know as today when the first grandstand was built in 1913. The stadium’s two main grandstands were completed by the end of the 1950s by which point it was regularly used for various sporting events.

The stadium features an asymmetrical design with each stand different from each other. The south stand, built in preparation for the hosting of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, is the newest of the four stands and features a translucent design the cleverly incorporates the silver fern, one of the symbols of New Zealand. At each of the stadium’s four corner entrances you’ll also find a Māori carvings representing different gods and spirits.

Apart from rugby union and cricket, the stadium has also hosted rugby league and association football matches. The stadium is also used for concerts as one of the city’s best options for local and visiting international musicians.

The stadium is located in the suburb of Kingsland, 3 kilometres southwest from centre of Auckland. If you choose to drive expect the trip to take approximately 15 minutes (extra on game days) but be aware limited parking is available around the stadium. The stadium can be reached using Auckland Transport’s Western Line train with the stadium located a 10-minute walk from Kingsland Station, the nearest station.
