Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, more commonly known as Barcelona-El Prat Airport, is a major international airport serving the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. The airport is named after Josep Tarradellas the first Catalan president under the current Spanish Constitution. The initial airport opened in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1948, when the first runway was built, where it began to become the airport that exists today.
BCN airport is one the busiest on the continent currently ranking second in Spain and sixth across Europe. The airport is a hub for a number of airlines including Iberia, Level, Air Nostrum and Vueling. Travellers can choose between these four airlines and another 70 airlines that connect to over 200 destinations across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
The airport features two terminals that are serviced by three runways. Terminal one, the newer of the two, handles international flights and from within the Schengen Area, whilst terminal two mostly handles flights serviced by low-cost airlines. Both terminals are well appointed and feature some of the best amenities that can be found across the European airports we have visited.
The centre of Barcelona is located approximately 12km from BCN airport and can be reached in approximately 20-40 minutes depending on the transport option chosen. Visitors can choose between the Aerobus, Renfe train service, Barcelona metro, regular city bus, taxi, Uber or private transfer. Each option varies in price and travel time and caters to all types of budgets.
