The Alex is a pub located in the suburb of Alexandria an inner-suburb of Sydney. The pub was formerly known as the Alexandria Hotel, a name it held for much of its 150-year-old history.
A pub has featured on the corner of Henderson Road and Garden Street since the opening of the Alexandria Family Hotel in 1874. In the 1930s, the pub came under the ownership of Tooth and Co. who went about redesigning the hotel, a design which remains virtually unchanged to this day.
In the mid-2010s there were plans to demolish the hotel in order to construct apartments. Luckily, this plan was prevented by a strong, local opposition group. The pub was eventually purchased by the Merivale group who undertook extensive renovations before reopening in 2021 after a five-year closure.
The Alexandria Hotel reopened as The Alex with a heavy focus on the local community. Most of the inside of the pub appears to have been left unchanged with the focus shifting to the pub’s spacious, outdoor section. The large outdoor area, known as Backyard at the Alex, features long tables, grandstand seating, a half-court basketball court and a bar located within an old shipping container.
