How to Visit the Mercado Agrícola in Montevideo

Housed within an elegant European-style, cast-iron building, the Mercado Agrícola is a relatively new addition to Montevideo’s culinary offerings. Having reopened in 2013 after being heavily renovated, the Mercado offers a bit of everything for both visitors and locals.

A number of bars and restaurants can be found near the entrance of the Mercado with a small food court set off to the left providing a more casual dining alternative. Unlike the Mercado del Puerto, the Mercado Agrícola still features a number of stores offering a variety of fresh produce with souvenir shops and mixed retail stores rounding out the Mercado’s vast offerings. The Mercado also hosts regular live music and cultural events.

A visit to the Mercado Agrícola can be paired easily with a visit to the nearby Palacio Legislativo, located a short 10-minute walk down Avenida General Flores. Both attractions can be visited in a morning when exploring Montevideo.
