How to Visit the Mercado del Puerto in Montevideo

Since opening in 1868, Montevideo’s Mercado del Puerto has been the centre of the city’s gastronomic offerings. Originally serving as Montevideo’s principal meat and produce market, the Mercado now features an assortment of bars and restaurants serving some of the best examples of Uruguayan cuisine.

The Mercado’s speciality is Asado, one of Uruguay’s main dishes. It’s impossible to miss, with each restaurant featuring a large parrilla covered in barbecued meats behind their counter. Visitors can also find a wide range of souvenir shops conveniently located throughout the market making it easy to grab something to remember your time here before heading home.

Located between the end of Montevideo’s old town and its port, the Mercado is easily reached via a short stroll from the Plaza Independencia. The Mercado del Puerto is one of Montevideo’s top attractions, easily within the top five, and should definitely not be missed when visiting the city.
