Tokyo Dome is an indoor baseball stadium located in Tokyo, Japan. The stadium is the home of Japanese baseball team Yomiuri Giants. The stadium opened in 1988 and features a seating capacity of 45,600. The stadium is colloquially known as ‘the big egg’ due its white, ovaloid shape.
The stadium replaced Korakeun Stadium the former home of the Yomiuri Giants. The stadium features an air-supported domed-shaped roof which was popular in the late 80s and early 90s and remains as one of the better utilized examples of the technology. Due to the stadium’s size and popularity, the venue is often used as a unit of measure to compare to other construction projects across Japan.
The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame is also located within the stadium chronicling the history of baseball in Japan. Tokyo Dome is also a popular concert venue having hosted popular Japanese and international musicians since its opening.
The stadium is located within what has now become Tokyo Dome City, an entertainment complex featuring an amusement park and a number of dining and retail outlets. The stadium is easily accessible via several of Tokyo’s rail lines. Suidobashi Station, Korkuen Station and Kasuga Station are all located within walking distance of the Tokyo Dome.
