Stadium Review: Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

The Estadio Azteca is a football stadium located in Mexico City. Opened in 1966, the Estadio Azteca, with its capacity of 87,523, is the largest football stadium in Latin America and the eighth largest in the world. The stadium recently became known as Estadio Banorte due to sponsorship reasons.

The stadium became the first stadium to host the final match of the tournament for a second time in 1986 after hosting the 1970 final. The stadium is expected to host five matches at the upcoming 2026 World Cup, including the opening match, making it the only stadium in the world to have hosted matches at three different FIFA World Cups: 1970, 1986 and 2026.

The stadium serves as the home of the Mexican National Football team and Mexican club team Club America. The stadium also regularly hosts matches as part of the NFL’s international series.

Estadio Azteca is located approximately 15km from the Zocalo. If visiting via public transport, alight at the Estadio Azteca light rail station located adjacent to the stadium and part of the Xochimilco Light Rail network.
