Johan Cruyff Arena is a football stadium located in Amsterdam. The stadium opened in 1996, features a capacity of 55,865 and is primarily used as the home ground of Dutch football team AFC Ajax. The stadium was previously known as Amsterdam Arena until 2019 when it was renamed in honour of Dutch Footballer Johan Cruyff.
Early plans for a new stadium in Amsterdam begun as part of the city’s plans to host the 1992 Olympic Games. When the games were awarded to Barcelona instead, the city continued to work towards construction of a new stadium to serve the city.
The Amsterdam Arena would eventually open in 1996 with AFC Ajax becoming the arena’s main tenant, moving in from the club’s smaller and outdated former home, De Meer Stadion. The stadium would also become the de facto home ground for the Dutch national football team.
The stadium is also a popular choice for continental finals having hosted the 1998 Champions League final and 2013 Europa League Final. Games at the 2000, which the Netherlands co-hosted, and 2020 European Football Championships were also hosted at the venue.
Due its large capacity for an indoor arena, the stadium is a popular concert venue regularly hosting larger scale international musicians when passing through the Netherlands on the European leg of their tours.
The best way to reach the stadium is via public transport. Visitors can choose been the Strandvliet station or the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station both part of the Amsterdam metro system and both located within walking distance of the stadium.
