Stadium Guide: Panathenaic Stadium, Athens

Panathenaic Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located in Athens, Greece. A stadium of some kind has existed on the site since at least 330 BC with the current design built in 1896 in order to host the first modern Olympic Games. The stadium is also known as Kallimarmaro, which means beautiful marble in Greek.

The stadium is a historical monument to sporting architecture. Its simple yet revolutionary design would go on to influence the design of stadiums around the world throughout the 20th Century with most horseshoe shaped stadiums around designed with the Panathenaic Stadium in mind.

At the 1896 Olympics the stadium held the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics, gymnastics, weightlifting and wrestling programs. The stadium would once again play a part at the 2004 Athens Olympics hosting the Archery program and the finish line for the men’s and women’s marathon. The stadium is also the final location in Greece before the Olympic flame is handed over to the current host nation.

Panathenaic Stadium is located in the centre of Athens within walking distance of many of the city’s historic and modern attractions. A self-guided tour of the stadium is available for a small fee which also includes access to the Olympic Museum located beneath the stands.
