The stadium was conceived as the new baseball specific home of the Padres who had played at San Diego Stadium from 1969 to 2003.

The stadium features a unique design amongst stadiums in Major League Baseball having been built at a time when most baseball stadiums in the United States were built in a retro modern design. Petco parks design is modern but thankfully didn’t revert to usual glass and steel trappings of most modern stadiums. Instead, the stadium features a stone-coloured exterior with plentiful natural foliage that is intended to reflect the natural environment in Southern California.

One of the stadiums most popular features is the way the historic Western Metal Supply Co. building has been integrated into the stadiums design giving the ballpark a great sense of place. Other popular features include Gallagher square a public park with great views of the game from the outfield. Due its many innovative design features, downtown location with excellent views of the city’s skyline, Petco Park regularly ranks as one of if not the best ballpark in Major League Baseball.

Two stops on the San Diego trolly are located with walking distance of the ballpark, alight at either the 12th & Imperial or Gaslamp Quarter stations if arriving via public transport.
