
The Piña Colada is a rum-based cocktail that originated in Puerto Rico. This classic pineapple-based cocktail is refreshing taste of the Caribbean that’s easy to make at home.
Many stories exist that tell of the famous drink’s creation. From a 19th century Puerto Rican Pirate Roberto Cofresi to bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton Hotel and many others all said to have created the Piña Colada.
The drink has since been one of the most famous tropical cocktails ingraining itself as part of national identity and popular culture. In 1978 the drink became the official drink of Puerto Rico with the 10th July celebrated annually as National Piña Colada Day. The drink inspired the song the 1979 song Escape (The Piña Colada song) by Rupert Holmes which has been featured in numerous movies and TV shows.
Preparation for the drink is fairly straightforward with all ingredients blended together with ice in a blender. Add fresh pieces of pineapple for a thicker and more natural tasting drink. The Poco Grande glass is the correct glass to serve a Piña Colada, but a hurricane glass will also do just fine.
Ingredients
- 60ml white rum
- 30ml coconut cream
- 60ml pineapple juice
- 1 pineapple
- Maraschino cherries
Preparation
- Add the rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice and pineapple chucks to a blender.
- Add ice
- Set the blender to pulse until you achieve a creamy texture
- Serve in poco grande or hurricane glass.
- Garnish with a pineapple wedge, pineapple leaf and a maraschino cherries.
