Cocktail Recipe: Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a vodka-based cocktail with an interesting history and, perhaps most importantly, a unique choice of drinkware.

However, like all famous cocktails there are several origin stories with everything from increasing the appeal of vodka amongst American drinkers to a Russian immigrant and her surplus stock of copper mugs all believed to have a had a part in the drink’s invention.

The drink is perhaps best known for the vessel in which it is served in. The distinctive cooper mug is said to keep the drink cooler for longer, but it is widely believed that the use of the mug was a key part of the way the drink was marketed making it easily recognisable when served at a bar.

Several variants of the Moscow Mule exist with most replacing the vodka for another spirit. The classic mule involves three simple ingredients can be made easily at home.

Ingredients

  • 45ml vodka
  • 1 lime
  • Ginger beer

Preparation

  1. Add ice to the copper mug
  2. Pour in the vodka, lime and ginger beer
  3. Stir all the ingredients
  4. Garnish with a lime wheel and mint sprig
