Cocktail Recipe: Negroni

The Negroni needs no introduction. This classic Italian aperitif cocktail has become one of the most famous cocktails for good reason. It’s much revered bitter taste and ease of preparation makes it easy to find in most bars around the world.

Like most of the best cocktails, its exact history is uncertain. One of the most common accounts is that the drink was first prepared by bartender Forsco Scarselli for the aptly named Count Camillo Negroni in 1919 at his bar in Florence.

The drink is considered to have originated as an offshoot of the Americano with gin replacing the drink’s soda water. The Negroni has since become an offshoot itself with other cocktails, such as the Negroni sbagliato, created by customising drink’s three ingredients.

The Negroni features a strong, bitter taste with no mixer to dilute the alcohol. The drink features three main ingredients that are easy to find with no special tools needed during its preparation. As the world’s most renowned aperitif, the Negroni is best enjoyed before dinner.
