Pub Review: The Shakespeare Hotel, Sydney

The Shakespeare Hotel is a pub located in Surry Hills, an inner-city suburb of Sydney just south-east of the city’s CBD. The pub as been operating under the same name and at the same location since first opening in 1879.

Affectionally known as the Shakey, the Shakespeare Hotel is a classic old school Sydney pub. Vintage, mirrored beer advertisements sit above the bar, beer-soaked carpets line the floors of the front bar and iconic Australian pub ties cover the building’s exterior. The pub looks like it hasn’t been renovated in over hundred years and that’s absolutely good thing! The Shakey refuses to change as most other venues in the area chase whatever’s popular.

The pub attracts a solid crowd of friendly and colourful characters that mingle around the small front bar or stand outside on the footpath beer in hand. The pub still offers accommodation in rooms that are decorated in era appropriate furnishings perfectly matching the old timey aesthetic of the pub downstairs.
