Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport is an international airport serving France’s third largest city Lyon since 1975. The airport is named in of honour of Lyonnais aviation pioneer and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, WWII fighter pilot and writer of the popular children’s book The Little Prince. Before 2000, the airport was formerly known as Lyon Satolas Airport.
The airport is not a hub for any airline, but serves a focus city for Air France, Easy Jet, Transavia France and Twin Jet. The airport is served by 45 airlines transporting travellers to cities across Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East. LYS continually ranks within France’s top five busiest airports.
The airport features two runways that serve the airports two, curved terminal buildings. Terminal one is used by most airlines and caters to both domestic and international flights. Terminal two is predominately used by Air France for their domestic and international flights. The airport is well designed with a central building connecting both terminal buildings and an elevated walkway connecting the airport to the futuristic Lyon Saint-Exupéry train station.
Despite being almost fifty years old, the airport still looks and feels modern. The airport features all the amenities travellers expect from an airport of this size. The design is seamless, making it easy for travellers to move between the different areas of the airport.
The airport is located 25km from the centre of Lyon. The Rhônexpress tramway connects Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu in central Lyon to the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupéry, located just outside the airport, in approximately 30 minutes. Taxi and Uber are also available but expect to pay more than double the price of the tramway with a slightly longer travel time.
