Airport Review: Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)

Blaise Diagne International Airport is the main airport serving the city of Dakar in Senegal. The airport is one of Africa’s newest having opened in 2017. The airport is named after Blaise Diagne, the first black African to be elected to the French parliament.

DSS airport replaced the more centrally located Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport (DKR) after a lengthy construction period fraught with numerous delays. Originally expected to open in 2011, the airport would not begin operations until December 2017.

The airport features a single runway serving one main terminal building that handles both domestic and international flights. The airport serves as the main hub for Senegalese airlines Air Senegal and Transair. DSS airport is also served by another 27 airlines that connects travellers to cities across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Despite having been open for less than 10 years, the airport is already starting to show its age. The new location is also inconvenient, located almost 60km from the centre of Dakar. We strongly suggest organising transportation before you arrive and expect the trip into the city to take approximately an hour. An airport to Dakar train link is under construction which should reduce travel time for visitors once it begins operations.
