Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is the main airport serving the Zanzibar Archipelago and the island of Unguja in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The airport was named after Abeid Amani Karume in 2010 in honor of the island’s first president having previously been named Kisauni Airport and Zanzibar International Airport.
The airport features three terminals of different sizes and capacity. The old terminal 1 is currently used as the airport’s offices whilst the former main terminal 2 is used for smaller flights. The brand-new terminal 3 opened in 2021 and is as modern, clean and efficient as any airport you’re likely to find across Africa. The airport is served by 38 different airlines that fly to destinations in Europe, Asia and across Africa.
The airport is located approximately 9 km from the heart of Stone Town, the old city of Zanzibar. We strongly recommend organising a personal transfer with your hotel ahead of your arrival as the availability of drivers outside the arrivals area can vary depending on the time of your flight. Expect the trip into town to take you approximately 20 minutes.
