How to Visit the Laguna Garzón Bridge in Uruguay

The Laguna Garzón Bridge is a mixed-use bridge located between the departments of Maldonado and Rocha in Uruguay.

Upon opening in 2015, the bridge became famous, especially on social media, for its unusual circular shape. This unusual design was an intentional choice by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly to force drivers to slow down when approaching allowing pedestrians to cross over each side of the bridge safely.

Prior to the bridge’s opening, the crossing between Maldonado and Rocha was served by a ferry. The new bridge greatly increased the crossing capacity allowing pedestrians to cross safely at all times while also allowing approximately 1,000 cars to pass each day.

The Laguna Garzón Bridge is located approximately 40km from Punta del Este, the closest major city. The best way to reach the bridge is by car, a relatively short 45-minute drive from the centre of Punta del Este.

Unfortunately, there is no way to appreciate the unique, circular shape of the bridge from ground level without the assistance of a drone. Nevertheless, the Laguna Garzón Bridge is one of Uruguay’s more unique attractions that is definitely worth a visit when in the area.
